te Pā’s General Manager Kelvin Deaker joined the company in mid-2019, bringing with him a varied background of agricultural and financial management and sporting expertise.
Born and raised in the Central Otago region of Cromwell, Kelvin wanted to be a farmer or an All Blacks player, but once he hit university, his parents (who were farmers themselves) told him to find another career outside farming. So, Kelvin instead followed a journey into accounting and business - but he did find a way to channel his passion for rugby, through a successful and high-profile career as an international rugby referee.
Beyond rugby refereeing, Kelvin has had varied and exciting roles in New Zealand’s regional heartlands, working in meat processing, sheep skin tanning, wine bottling, honey, and now, vineyards and wine with te Pā. Most recently, Kelvin was CFO and then general manager at Taylor Pass Honey Co in Marlborough.
On joining Haysley MacDonald and the team at te Pā, which is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing wine companies, Kelvin says; "Everything I’ve done throughout my career has been based around growing, processing, and selling agricultural products. Being able to work with something grown on Marlborough land and sharing the essence of this iconic region with the world, through a bottle of wine, is a really special thing."
Outside the office, chartered accountant Kelvin is involved in several community activities and groups, and he is still involved in refereeing and the local rugby community. He loves a glass of te Pā Pinot Noir, and is an avid bike rider and lover of the great outdoors.
