New Reserve Collection launched

te Pa has expanded into the ultra-premium New Zealand wine category, with its new Reserve Collection.

For the first time, te Pa Family Vineyards of Marlborough has expanded into the ultra-premium New Zealand wine category, with the release of its te Pa Reserve Collection.

Launching initially with the 2018 te Pa Hillside Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (from the estate-owned Redwood Hills vineyard in the Awatere Valley) and the 2017 te Pa St. Leonard’s Reserve Chardonnay (from the St Leonard’s vineyard in the Central Wairau Valley), the Reserve Collection offers wines grown and made to express each vineyard’s terroir.  

Winemaker Sam Bennett says, “The Reserve Collection was initially conceived to highlight the differences between our two key Sauvignon Blanc estate vineyards, being the Wairau Bar vineyard, and the Redwood Hills vineyard in the Awatere Valley. This concept was expanded to include a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir from some exceptional vineyards in the Central Wairau Valley.”

In terms of winemaking the Reserve wines are made as ‘hands off’ as possible, the aim being to create wines which express their unique sense of place.

Bennett says, “These are wines that are pure and authentic expressions of where and how they are grown. Of course, being expressive is only one part of the equation; these wines also have to be delicious and they will only be produced from sites and in seasons where we consider the fruit quality to be exceptional.  

“In practical winemaking terms we try to use time instead of technology. Time on lees, time in barrel, and long settling times, often enable these wines to be racked instead of filtered with no or very little fining.”

Even before being released into market, the wines have already received critical acclaim, with well-known New Zealand wine reviewer, Raymond Chan, scoring the Hillside Sauvignon Blanc and the St. Leonard’s Chardonnay, five stars each.

The Hillside Reserve Sauvignon Blanc was produced from handpicked fruit grown on the mid and upper slopes of te Pa’s Redwood Hills Vineyard, in the Awatere Valley. The wine offers a ripe and concentrated expression of Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc with pungent aromatics, a core of generous fruit and a lovely chalky, classically Awatere minerality.

The St Leonard’s Reserve Chardonnay was made from mature Mendoza clone fruit from the St Leonard’s Vineyard. Concentrated and elegant, this wine expresses vibrant fruit with a beautifully textured palate. Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, high solids ferment, un-filtered and un-fined, this is a selection of our six best barrels from this vineyard site.

The 2017 te Pa Reserve Taylor River Pinot Noir is due to be released in the Southern Hemisphere’s winter (mid 2019).
