The MacDonald family's farming legacy in Marlborough
While the story behind our popular te Pa, Pa Road and Koha ranges is well known, Montford Estate offers a glimpse of a different part of the MacDonald family history. Of course, the heritage of Haysley MacDonald's ancestors arriving to the Wairau Bar in Marlborough some 800 years ago still runs through the heart of the Montford range, this story focuses more on the fascinating farming history of the large Blenheim clan.
The brand name itself takes inspiration from te Pa Family Vineyard’s history. Montford Corporation was the original trading names for our grape growing and machinery harvesting side of the business, and has been for almost two decades.
The name came when Haysley’s dad Philip travelled to the USA close to 20 years ago and saw all the big beef and dairy farms, and wanted a strong, classic name for the family's businesses back here in NZ. Back home, he knew Montford was the perfect fit for the family's growing agricultural enterprises, which included the beef farm and a hugely successful potato growing and potato-chip processing operation.
Fast forward a few more years, and Haysley had planted grapes on his family's land in the fertile soils of the lower Wairau Valley in 2003, converting the productive land to Sauvignon Blanc vines. For the next few years, Haysley was a contract grower for other Marlborough wineries - but when he saw just how good the fruit from his home land was, he knew he had to sell it under his own brand. And with that thought, te Pa Family Vineyards was launched in 2011 to critical acclaim.
Since then, we have expanded our hero te Pa range, and we've also added the Koha range, and the Pa Road range, which was launched in late 2016, and is now one of the fastest growing wine brands in New Zealand.
2019 marks a natural time for us to add one more addition to our whanau of brands, and our team worked hard for over six months to create this exciting new offering - and now, we can't wait to share this simple, honest taste of our home with the world.
A classic label with a beautiful twist
For the label, we looked to classic French and other European wine labels, which tend to be quite minimal, conservative, but often with a beautiful embellishment or detail that gave it a lift and made something simple, become elegant. The gold ME brand takes the lead from old cattle brands, which gives a nod to the MacDonald's cattle grazing and beef processing company that was a successful Marlborough business in the 90s and early 2000s.
Sustainably grown wines from New Zealand's heartland regions
Each of the Montford Estate wines are from SWNZ (Sustainable Wine Growing NZ) accredited vineyards, and all of the wines in the current vintage are vegan and vegetarian friendly.
The Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Marlborough Pinot Gris are from two of our large estate vineyards, in the lower Wairau Valley (our Wairau Bar 'Home' vineyard) and the Awatere Valley (our 'Redwood Hills' vineyard). The Merlot-Cabernet was grown for us on the famous Omahu Gravel's in Hawke's Bay in the North Island of New Zealand.
Read on to see our winemaker Sam Bennett's tasting notes for each of the wines:
Montford Estate 2019 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
Expressive and ripe aromatics of stone fruit, passionfruit, and melon. The palate is medium bodied with gooseberry, guava, fresh herb and fennel characters. The richness and mid palate weight from lees stirring is balanced by Awatere minerality and delicate chalky phenolics.
Montford Estate 2019 Marlborough Pinot Gris
This wine possesses a bouquet of fresh pear, ginger spice and floral notes. Richly textured, ripe and full bodied in style. Pear and stone fruit flavours are supported by hints of fennel and nutmeg. Lingering spice and delicate acidity give this wine a fresh and flavoursome finish.
Montford Estate 2017 Hawke's Bay Merlot-Cabernet
Aromas of spiced plum and cassis with dried tobacco, mocha and smoky notes. A plush and generous palate where the red and black fruits are framed by fine integrated tannins.
