Trio of Golds in the New World Wine Awards Top 50

  • by Mikela Dennison

The team at te Pa Family Vineyards (producers of te Pa, Montford Estate, and Pa Road Wines) is delighted to share that three of their wines have won gold medals and spots in the New World Wine Awards Top 50.

Owner and founder Haysley MacDonald says; “To have one wine win a spot in the exclusive New World Wine Awards Top 50 is a real coup, so to have three wines recognised this year is an outstanding result for our team.”

Chief Winemaker Sam Bennett says of the win; “The New World Wine Awards is one of New Zealand's highest profile wine competitions, where a successful result sees the wine immediately available on shelves in New World stores across the country.

“Shoppers love the New World Wine Awards because it's a clear and trusted signal of high quality wines that over-deliver for the price point, from a household name supermarket brand. And wineries love it because it means more people can taste and enjoy the wines we work so hard to grow, make and promote.”

te Pa 2023 Pinot Noir Rosé: GOLD, Top 50

90% of the fruit for this award-winning Rosé was harvested from the lower Wairau Valley vineyard, which is one of te Pa’s youngest plantings. The fruit harvested for this wine was the first pick of the company’s whole 2023 harvest.

Winemaker Sam says of the award-winning wine; “This Pinot Noir Rosé is a very attractive pink rose petal colour. It possesses a complex and perfumed bouquet of peach, crushed red fruits, delicate cherry blossom florals, with some intriguing spice and confected notes.

The Rosé is bone dry and textural with a crisp clean finish. Watermelon, strawberries, cinnamon, and star anise flavours are supported by a gentle vein of lingering acidity and a moreish hint of salinity."

Food pairing ideas: Try serving this Rosé chilled, with rock melon wrapped in prosciutto and rocket leaves. Alternatively, this wine will match perfectly with fresh shellfish like clams, oysters, crayfish or prawns, rich fish like tuna and salmon, or charcuterie and soft cheeses.

Montford Estate 2023 Sauvignon Blanc: GOLD, Top 50

This exceptional single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc was made with grapes from the picturesque Awatere Valley 'Redwood Hills' vineyard.

Sam Bennett says of the wine: “An alluring and perfumed bouquet with white florals, fresh herbs and lime and grapefruit notes. The palate is pure fruited with lime, mint, anise, and blackcurrant characters. Finely textured and beautifully balanced, this wine possesses a wet stone and talc minerality, which compliments the concentrated and elegant primary fruit profile."

Food pairing ideas: Enjoy with kaimoana (seafood) especially oysters, white fish, clams, and prawns this summer. Also great with a green salad topped with goat's cheese such as chèvre.

Montford Estate 2021 Pinot Noir: GOLD, Top 50

Sam says of this brooding Pinot Noir: "The wine boasts aromatics of red cherry, spiced strawberry, and raspberry coulis mingle with delicate allspice notes and an earthy complexity to create a richly perfumed bouquet.

The palate is rich and velvety, again with primary fruits and bramble, accentuated with a fine layer of cedary oak and a dusting of fruit spice."

Food pairing ideas: This Pinot Noir is an ideal drop for the festive season, and will match well with ham, chicken, turkey, and BBQ meats too. For vegetarian options, try a mushroom risotto or pasta, or a nutty cheese like Gruyère or Comté.

The trio of wins at the New World Wine Awards comes hot on the heels of te Pa Family Vineyards’ quadruple wins at the prestigious New Zealand International Wine Show in September. The team saw great successes with gold medals or higher for four wines across three of its acclaimed brands:

  • te Pa 2021 Reserve Collection 'Westhaven' Pinot Noir: GOLD
  • Pa Road 2023 Pinot Gris: GOLD
  • Montford Estate 2023 Pinot Gris: GOLD
  • Montford Estate 2023 Rose: DOUBLE GOLD

Haysley MacDonald says; “It's been particularly satisfying for our team to see the new vintage 2023 wines perform so well in the shows this year. ”

Sam Bennett adds; “With exceptional concentration and length, all of our 2023 wines have proven to be a hit with judges this season, and with wine drinkers at home too. The Pinot Noir wines from our 2021 vintage are also showing and drinking amazingly well - due to a fantastic growing season that produced wines with incredible structure, length, and concentration of flavour.”
