Top Pinot Noir scores with Burghound

  • by Mikela Dennison

We are truly delighted to have received top scores from Allen Meadow's Burghound website for our two most premium Pinot Noir wines.

Allen Meadows is one of the world's authorities on Pinot Noir. His Burghound.com website covers Burgundy wines extensively, with a particular focus on red Burgundy aka Pinot Noir.

We recently submitted our Pinot Noir wines to Burghound for review, and we are beyond proud to have received two 90 point plus scores.

te Pa 2017 Pinot Noir: 90 points

An overtly spicy nose combines notes of both red and dark pinot fruit with a mentholated top note and enough spice elements to be interesting. The vibrant and attractively textured flavors possess reasonably good mid-palate density, all wrapped in an ever-so-mildly austere and sneaky long finish where touches of acid tang and warmth slowly emerge. This is already displaying good depth and could be enjoyed now though I would be inclined to cellar it for at least a few years first. 90/2025+

te Pa 2017 Reserve Collection 'Taylor River' Pinot Noir: 92 points

A much more elegant and beautifully layered nose is comprised by intense floral nuances that add breadth to the cool and admirably pure aromas of black cherry and dark currant. The succulent, caressing and plush medium-bodied flavors possess fine volume and intensity before culminating in a dusty and palate coating finish that also displays a touch of acid tang on the somewhat attenuated finish that comes up a bit short. This is an impressively complex wine though the balance isn’t quite completely dialed in. Still, I suspect that as the tannins begin to resolve, the attenuated aspect may well improve, and my rating offers the benefit of the doubt that this will occur over time. 92/2027+

Marlborough Pinot Noir shines on the world stage

Both of these stunning wines are grown here in Marlborough, New Zealand. The wines are both single vineyard, hand-picked, from the prestigious Southern Valley sub-region of Marlborough. Pinot Noir from the Marlborough wine region is gaining strong international acclaim, after being in the shadow of the global sensation that is Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir from this beautiful place tend to display dark cherry and plums with red-fruited spicy backgrounds, mid-weight, and fine tannins.

The 2017 Reserve Collection Pinot Noir is available in limited quantities from our online store. We have recently rolled vintages for our te Pa Pinot Noir, with the exceptional 2019 vintage wine now available online here and in good liquor retailers around New Zealand. There is some 2017 wine available in the USA - please get in touch if you would like to be connected to a USA stockist.
